A recent article in The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) has sparked widespread discussion in the industry: Is the golden age of luxury handbags coming to an end? According to data from Bain & Company, luxury handbag sales have dropped by nearly 10% from their 2023 peak, representing an annual spending gap of about $8 billion. As the President of the Asia Luxury Association (ALA), I have been closely monitoring these market dynamics, and today I want to share my insights with you.
First, we are witnessing a clear shift in consumer demand. While sales in primary luxury boutiques are slowing down, the secondary market is experiencing a boom. On platforms like The RealReal, luxury handbag sales have increased by 20% since 2023. Even more interestingly, search volume for "vintage handbags" surged by 131% year-over-year in May. This indicates a new phenomenon: today's consumers believe that carrying a vintage designer bag with a story is "cooler" and more tasteful than buying a brand-new release.
What is causing this shift? The industry generally believes it is related to the overly aggressive price hikes by some brands (such as LVMH and Chanel) during the pandemic. This approach has, to some extent, alienated consumers, making them feel that the value proposition is no longer there. However, this does not mean the market is unrecoverable. As long as brands can adjust their strategies and rebuild trust with consumers, they still have a chance to win them back. For instance, Chanel has already successfully revamped its handbag product lines in response to market changes.
The article uses a fascinating analogy: "Pineapples vs. Real Estate." As a status symbol, will handbags hold their value long-term like real estate, or will they fall out of favor as supply increases, much like pineapples, which were considered a luxury in the 17th century? I believe this depends on how brands maintain their scarcity and core values. For us in the pre-owned luxury business, this is an era full of opportunities. The rise of vintage handbags is the perfect time for us to leverage our expertise and provide unique value to consumers.
